Connection to the Unknown
Throughout The Great Gatsby, we meet many very wealthy people. Many of the people we meet could easily pay off all my college without a blink of an eye (that would be amazing). However, all the people we meet are wishing for more than they have. Tom is unable to form meaningful relationships, Daisy is stuck in an abusive one, and Gatsby is longing for a relationship in the past that will never come to fruition. Through these characters, we see that despite their monetary wealth, they lack the things in life that truly satisfy them. Their monetary wealth means nothing to them in the big picture. They are all still craving for human connection (funny it’s almost like that’s the name of my blog…).
These wealthy people have almost anything they want, they can eat the best food and live in the best houses, they can go to the best parties and drink the best alcohol; however, to them, it means almost nothing. They don't understand how important relationships and emotional connections are so they constantly marry people with similar amounts of wealth. The false happiness wealth brings them is all they've known, so they never long or search for more. If they ever were to forsake their wealth and experience true relationships, I doubt they would go back to their money-centered views of the world. They would still place money of high importance; but, they would understand that there's more to life than money.
Seek connection to things you’ve never experienced before.

Wow! Your analyzation of the main character’s wealth and their actual real human connections is amazing! I loved that you mentioned that if the main characters were to seek these connections, then they would never go back to their money-centered views, I found that very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI love your perspective on the wealthy! I totally agree with the fact that because the charecters have only really known wealth or strived for wealth they don’t know how to genuinely achieve happiness and instead desire materialistic needs without realizing that they need to connect with each other to genuinely be happy. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteIt really makes sense that Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy are all so miserable because they value wealth over human connection (very much like your blog name...). It made me think about Nick, who has some wealth but not an insane amount. He seems to have decent relationships with the characters in the book and isn't dependent on his wealth (or a single person) to make him happy.
ReplyDelete"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…" (Fitzgerald 179-180). Connection fosters care, and caring brings connection. 😉
